Guitar - Intermediate - SKU: ZY.DO-1522 Composed by Francis Bebey. Arranged by Ingrid Riollot. Score. 5 pages. Les Editions Doberman-Yppan (digital) #DO 1522. Published by Les Editions Doberman-Yppan (digital) (ZY.DO-1522). Son originalité continue de résonner dans le monde entier depuis son décès à la fin du mois de mai 2001.Francis Bebey was born in Douala in July 1929, into a large family where his father, a pastor, struggled to feed his children. But Francis had the opportunity to go to school. Admiring his elder brother, Marcel Eyidi Bebey, he educated himself, distinguished himself, and eventually received a scholarship to go and take his baccalaureate in France. We approached the end of the 1950s when he arrived in La Rochelle. More than ever, in this France where Africans were looked at with curiosity, condescension, or disdain, Francis relied on his intellectual resources. A diligent worker, he obtained his Baccalaureate, then moved to Paris where he started English studies at the Sorbonne. One day, he knew what truly attracted him: he wanted to do radio. Francis learned his craft in France and in the USA.After working for a few years as a reporter, he was hired in 1961 as an international civil servant in the UNESCO Information Department. In parallel, Francis had always been drawn to musical creation. His very serious daytime activity didnâ??t prevent him from frequenting jazz clubs in the evenings. In Paris, the Jazz, the trendy music of that time, but also rumba and salsa attracted him. He collected records and attended numerous concerts. With his accomplice Manu Dibango, Francis took the stage and played music.Francis liked classical music since his childhood. He grew up listening to the cantatas and oratorios of Bach or Handel that his father had sung in the temple. He became passionate about the guitar, impressed by the Spanish and South American masters, and decided to learn to strum the instrument himself. He started composing guitar pieces, blending the various influences that flow through him with the traditional African music he had carried within since childhood. His approach captivated the director of the American Cultural Center (then located in the Saint-Germain neighborhood of Paris), who offered him the opportunity to perform in front of an audience. Francis gave his first guitar recital there (1963) in front of a mesmerized audience. His first solo album was released shortly thereafter.Gradually, Francis became recognized as a musician and composer. Several albums of the African guitar ambassador, as described by the press, were released. He also wrote books, to the point that his artistic career became challenging to reconcile with his career as a civil servant. In 1974, even though he had become the General Manager in charge of music at UNESCO, he took the bold leap and resigned from this prestigious institution to dedicated himself to the three activities that interested him: music, literature, and journalism. He explored the traditional musical heritage of the African continent, notably through the thumb piano sanza, and the polyphonic music of the Central African pygmies, or singing in his native language and composing humoristic songs in French!Success followed. Francis Bebey traveled the world: from France to Brazil, Cameroon to Sweden, Germany to the Carribean, or Morocco to Japan... the list of countries where he was invited to perform, gives lectures, or meets readers is very long. In addition to public recognition, he enjoyed the recognition of his fellow musicians, such as guitarist John Williams or Venezuelan Antonio Lauro, who invited him to be a part of the jury for a classical guitar competition in Caracas. His life was the journey of an African pioneer, a man rooted in his cultural heritage and carrying a message of sharing and hope for the world. His originality continues to vibrate around the world since his passing at the end of May 2001.

Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - SKU: A0.995505 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Sarah Playford. Folk,Gospel,Sacred,Spiritual. Score and parts. 13 pages. Sarah Playford #3556601. Published by Sarah Playford (A0.995505). An intermediate work for Brass Septet arranged by Sarah Playford. Duration 2 minutes 40 seconds. The work is relatively simple but with demanding sections, ideal for demonstrating virtuosity of players. The piece explores clashing harmonies bringing a unique interpretation and instrumental colour to this traditional folk song. Perfect piece for concert or open air performance.Based on the formally published Slave Song The Good Old Way (1867) the exact origin of the melody is unknown but research points heavily to being composed by an African-American slave. The song has since been used in the 2000 feature film O Brother, Where Art Thou? as well as being interpreted by American bluesgrass-country singer Alison Krauss in 2002.

Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - SKU: A0.808676 Composed by Scott Joplin (1868–1917). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. 20th Century,Film/TV,Folk,Holiday,Love,Ragtime. Score and parts. 20 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #3213035. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808676). Marvin Hamlisch’s score for the 1973 movie The Sting revived interest in ragtime music. Ragtime, of course, is music, often in march-time, that features syncopation, a ragged beat. It originated in African-American districts of large cities and first flourished during the period, 1895-1918. One of the most successful ragtime composers was Scott Joplin, known as the King of Ragtime. Hamlisch used several Joplin compositions as background music for the George Roy Hill-directed film, and one of those was this beautiful and contemplative 1909 composition, Solace: A Mexican Serenade. In All Music Guide to Classical Music: The Definitive Guide to Classical Music (Woodstra et al., ed., CMP Books: 2005), Blair Johnston called Solace a musical hybrid neither authentically Mexican nor authentic ragtime. It is, instead, a habanera, but also a very lovely piece of Americana. This brass quintet arrangement of Solace was adapted from the Joplin piano score. Like the score, this arrangement is in 2/4 time and contains a lot of 16th notes. Joplin’s tempo instruction, however, is Very slow march time, and the metronome marking suggests 96 eighth notes a minute, so in reality the actual tempo is an andante 4/8. Trumpet 1 has some B-above-the-staff notes in the last section, Trumpet 2 has a few interesting rhythmic figures in section B; Trombone has 3 or 4 F-above-the-staff notes, and Tuba plays a couple of top-of-the-staff A’s in section D and at the very end. Plus, of course, the piece is syncopated. Completed in 2017, this arrangement runs about 6 minutes, 10 seconds. Contact the arranger, Les Smith, at lessmith@ufl.edu; he would be delighted to hear from you. Piano Solo - Level 3 - SKU: A0.1110548 Composed by African-American Spiritual. Arranged by John Lehrack. Folk,Historic,Religious,Sacred,Spiritual. Score. 4 pages. GGLS Publishing #712849. Published by GGLS Publishing (A0.1110548). This arrangement of the African-American spiritual, Were You There, takes us through the crucifixion of Jesus, his entombment and resurrection. After the plaintive introduction, the first verse is a modified arrangement of the standard hymn and asks Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Verse 2 begins with a little hope that quickly turns to disbelief at watching nails being driven into the Christ: Were you there when they nailed him to a tree?. The left hand simulates the hammer and slowly, slowly, Jesus dies. The key of the third verse is lower than the first two, minor and dissonant and symbolic of Christ being lowered into a tomb. Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? The opening motif returns now, full of quiet despair but gradually evolves into light shining from the tomb and bringing forth hope. Finally, the last verse Were you there when he rose up from the grave? is in an entirely new key from the first three verses and moves with more excitement. Joy builds and the left hand never stays down for long, constantly rising again and again as Christ is raised from the dead in triumph. We conclude with a softening and slowly into contented joy, secure in our faith and knowledge of rebirth.

Easy Piano - Level 2 - SKU: A0.1026807 Composed by Traditional African American folksong. Arranged by Lindsey James. Blues,Contemporary,Folk,Instructional. Score. 3 pages. Lindsey James #6419199. Published by Lindsey James (A0.1026807). Ideal for the KS3 classroom, this keyboard/piano arrangement of an African American folk song, complete with letter names, lyrics and optional added bass line figurations can be played by one student using both hands, or by two students working in a pair and learning one hand each. The syncopated rhythms of the right hand create excitement, and the bare fifth chords in the left hand lend a sense of strength and empowerment to the piece. This song would suit topics on folksong, work songs, or more general themes such as teamwork and collaboration.

Piano Solo - Level 3 - SKU: A0.918262 Arranged by Dillon's Music Group. African. Score. 3 pages. Dillon's Music Group #6013055. Published by Dillon's Music Group (A0.918262). Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child is traced back to the era of slavery. It's an expression of pain and despair as the lyrics describe the hopelessness of a child torn from its parents. Steal Away is a song with a coded message, not only about having faith in God, but messages about slaves running away to seek their freedom. Sung softly in the dark of night, it was a signal that the coast was clear and now was the time to escape their bondage. They sang hopefully: Steal away, steal away, Steal away to Jesus! Steal away, steal away home, I ain't got long to stay here. (included in Brenda Dillon's African American Collection)About the arranger: Brenda Dillon is best known for her contributions to the Recreational Music Making movement. She served on the RMM Committee that designed the RMM Track for MTNA's Pedagogy Saturday. Saxophone Quintet,Woodwind Ensemble Alto Saxophone - Level 3 - SKU: A0.813820 Composed by Antonin Dvorak. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Contemporary,Folk,Romantic Period,Standards. 18 pages. Regis Bookshar #6533331. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813820). Largo (from Symphony No. 9 in E minor) (From the New World) (Alto Saxophone Quintet) - Intermediate - . This marvelous arrangement of the Largo, based on the second movement of Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E minor, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services, especially Funerals, but would be appropriate any time during the church year. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (18 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 (subtitled From the New World and popularly know as the New World Symphony), was composed by Antonin Dvorak in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895. It premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York City on December 16, 1893 and has been described as one of the most popular of all symphonies. The second movement of the symphony, upon which this arrangement is based, is marked Largo, and begins with a harmonic progression of chords which is then followed by a solo instrument playing the famous main theme.Dvorak was interested in Native American music and the African-American spirituals he heard in North America. While director of the National Conservatory he encountered an African-American student, Harry T. Burleigh, who sang traditional spirituals to him. Burleigh, later a composer himself, said that Dvorak had absorbed their spirit before writing his own melodies. Dvorak stated:    I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them.He further explained how Native American music influenced his symphony:  I have not actually used any of these (Native American) melodies. I have simply written original themes embodying the peculiarities of the Indian music, and, using these themes as subjects, have developed them with all the resources of modern rhythms, counterpoint, and orchestral colour. In 1893, a newspaper interview quoted Dvorak as saying, I found that the music of the negroes and of the Indians was practically identical, and that the music of the two races bore a remarkable similarity to the music of Scotland. Most historians agree that Dvorak is referring to the pentatonic scale, which is typical of each of these musical traditions.Dvorak was influenced not only by music he heard, but also by what he had seen, in America. He wrote that he would not have composed his American pieces as he had if he had not seen America. It has been said that Dvorak was inspired by the wide open spaces of America, such as the prairies he may have seen on his trip to Iowa in the summer of 1893. Notices about several performances of the symphony include the phrase wide open spaces about what inspired the symphony and/or about the feelings it conveys to listeners. The theme from the Largo was adapted into the spiritual Goin' Home (often mistakenly considered a folk song or traditional spiritual) by Dvorak's pupil, William Arms Fisher, who wrote the lyrics in 1922. Regis Bookshar thought it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, in addition to this version for an Alto Saxophone Quintet, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selection which are readily available for a wide variety o.
